From the bedtime stories from our grandmothers/ naani to any night out/ house parties with friends, the stories of ghosts and spirits are always a hot topic. There are always people who wants to be acknowledged as brave or the ones who are more curious than a cat who love to share their so called ghost encounters or stories, after all we all have a very keen side to know the unknown.
India is a country full of superstitions, mythology, mysteriousness and magic and these attributes attract the whole world which wanders the nation in search of adventure, mystery and the haunted.
Let’s take a stride to find the spookiest and most haunted places in India:
- The Bhangarh Fort, Rajasthan
To the ones who already have gone on an adventure to seek the paranormal, this place is not unknown as it is the most popular haunted place in India. Built in 17th century by Bhagwant Das for his son Madho Singh in the Alwar district of Rajasthan, this fort is famous for the most bone chilling haunted incidents. People have claimed to see ghosts, heard sound of people singing and dancing from inside the fort. There have also been incidents reported of people vanishing at night, hence the government of India has put up a signboard issuing a warning to trespassers at night. There are two legends which tries to explain what led to the present belief of people. In the first, it says that a Sadhu named Baba Balak Nath allowed the King to build the fort but warned him that no shadow should reach his meditation area. The king ignored his warning and the Sadhu cursed the entire village. Another legend says there was a wizard named Sinhai who fell in love with Princes Ratnavati and created a magic potion to win her over. On discovering wizard’s true intention, Princess threw the magic potion on a rock which fell on the wizard and crushed him. 2. Dow Hill Kurseong
We all are familiar with stories of a haunted room, a haunted building or a haunted house but what if the whole town is haunted. The Dow Hill is a hill station located just 30 kms from Darjeeling, West Bengal. From a haunted school, to a haunted forest, a haunted road, mysterious deaths to a headless ghost, this town has everything what a ghost story need. There’s a school named Victoria boys high school where locals claim to hear whispers, noises and footsteps even when the school is closed. The haunted forest near the school has a history of countless mysterious deaths and till this date there have been reports of people going crazy or committing suicide there. There’s even a road which is known as the death road where people have claimed to see a headless young boy number of times.
3. Agrasen Ki Baoli.
We all now know the famous Agrasen ki Baoli which suddenly gained popularity thanks to Amir Khan’s character chilling there in P.K. Located right in the heart of Delhi, this is one of the oldest monuments built and still preserved. It has its origin in the 14th century Mahabharata days and was built by Maharaja Agrasen. There is a myth that this place was filled with evil black water which called out to people and hypnotised them to sacrifice their life by drowning them in it as it raises it’s level. Even today people have felt a very strong evil presence there which follows them and there has been reports of sightings of dark spirits at night, hence people avoid going there after dark.
4. Dumas Beach, Gujarat
We all love to spend our vacation on a beautiful beach, a walk on the sand while listening to sound of the ocean which can revitalize even the most tired soul. But what if the beach was haunted? Located just 20 kms from Surat, Gujarat the beautiful Dumas Beach by day turns into a Devil’s playground by night. The beach is believed to be used a burial ground for Hindus, which might be a reason for the dark sand on the beach. There are reports of people missing or even dying mysteriously at night. Tourists and locals avoid the beach after the sun goes down as there are reports of sounds of laughing and crying from the beach when not even a single person is visible. The paranormal activities on this beach is unexplainable. Locals have a belief that the haunting spirts of the buried people on this beach have not left the region.
5. The Chudail Baudi
If the stories and legends are to be believed, Shimla has the most haunted places and stories in India. There are numbers of places and stories which can leave us cold blooded and scared out of our souls. One popular among these legends is story about ghost of a lady in white clothes. There is a road stretch between Shimla and chota Shimla which is known as the Churail Baudi. Many have claimed that when they were driving on this stretch, their vehicles automatically slowed down no matter how hard they pushed the paddle down to speed up. People have reportedly seen a lady in white clothes asking for lift and even if they don’t stop, She appears to be sitting in their back seat, staring at them . Due to this, there have been many accidents and deaths reported there.
