Manoj Bajpayee's Long, Hard-Earned Journey Awarded With Padma Shri

Manoj Bajpayee is one of the most talented actors to have worked in the Indian Cinema. He is credited for some of the most memorable performances in movies. Be it his full-fledged performance in Ram Gopal Varma’s 1998 crime drama- Satya where he played gangster Bhiku Mhatre or his portrayal of a gay Marathi professor in a biographical, Aligarh.  Both the performances earned him accolades and showed how diverse an actor Manoj is.

Recognizing his talent and dedication towards his work, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs announced Manoj Bajpayee as the recipient of Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India. A day after his name was announced, Manoj said in an interview with Hindustan Times, “It’s a huge honour for any professional because it’s not an honour for just one particular film or performance. It’s an honour for your journey, for your conviction and belief that you had.”

Adding to this Manoj said, “Also, for the government, it’s a way of recognizing the contribution that one has made to cinema. So, yes, I am feeling very happy about it. My family, friends and fans have been sending messages to me. I am feeling ecstatic that my work has been recognized by the highest office.”

Amongst others, prominent names to receive the Padma Shri along with Manoj Bajpayee are Kader Khan (posthumous), Shankar Mahadevan and Mohanlal. Singer-composer Shankar Mahadevan dedicated the award to his musical partners Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa and said,” I am humbled and honoured. I think it is one of the biggest civilian awards that one can get. Now I have a responsibility to make good music.”
