All 4 Hyderabad Rape-Murder Accused Killed In "Encounter" With Police, People Rejoice
In a surprising turn of events, the four accused in the Hyderabad rape-murder case of the veterinarian were shot dead by the police on Friday morning.
According to the Cyberabad police, the encounter happened at the same spot where the accused raped and murdered the 27-year-old vet. The accused were taken to the crime scene to recreate the incident when they tried to escape. The police then open-fired at the four accused in self-defence. All of them were rushed to the hospital where they succumbed to bullet injuries.
The four men were identified as Mohammed (26), Jollu Shiva (20), Jollu Naveen (20) and Chintakunta Chennakeshavulu (20) and were arrested on November 29 for allegedly raping and killing the woman by smothering her and later burning her body.
The news soon spread across the country like a wildfire and while many congratulated the police action, there were a number of them who condemned the action, calling it ‘murder’.
Meanwhile, the father of the women vet said he was very happy about the four accused being killed by the police in an encounter and thanked the police and Telangana government for the action. “We watched on TV that they were killed in an encounter. We are very happy. Even people are happy. I thank the Telangana government and police for the encounter. I thank everyone who stood by us,” he said.
The woman’s sister said, “We are happy. We did not expect this (killing in an encounter). We thought they would be hanged through the court.” She further told the reporters, “We thank everyone who stood by us. With this incident, people should be scared to do such crimes (against women).”
2012 Delhi gang-rape victim, Nirbhaya’s parents were the first to welcome the action. Nirbhaya’s mother appealed to the authorities to not punish the policemen involved in the encounter. Nirbhaya’s father shared the thoughts of her mother and said the family’s wait for justice ended early. He said, “The family of the Hyderabad doctor will not have to wait for justice for seven years like us. Police did the right thing.”
Many politicians and celebrities have echoed Nirbhaya’s parents’ sentiments and congratulated the Telangana Police on their action.
While on the other hand, many people questioned the circumstances that envelope the encounter and death of the four accused.
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor in his tweet suggested taking caution in the matter. His tweet in response to that of Katherine Abraham read: “Agree in principle. We need to know more, for instance, if the criminals were armed, the police may have been justified in opening fire preemptively. Until details emerge we should not rush to condemn. But extra-judicial killings are otherwise unacceptable in a society of law.”

The Centre has sought a report from Telangana government over “custodial killing” of the four accused. According to a source in the Ministry of Home Affairs, it is killing in custody and hence, as per guidelines state will have to apprise NHRC via MHA. “Since Parliament is in session, and the ministers can be asked questions, ministry of home affairs will have to be prepared with the facts,” the source added.
